IBM revealed on Monday that it will acquire Confluent, a data streaming vendor, for $11 billion.
Confluent's platform is built on the open source Apache Kafka architecture, and the vendor recently jumped into the generative AI market by building multi-agent systems into its platform.
IBM stated said the acquisition demonstrates its ongoing commitment to open source.
The acquisition also illuminates a trend within the generative AI market for AI agents to be using streaming data or moving data versus static data, said Stephen Catanzano, an analyst at Omdia, a division of Informa TechTarget.
Streaming data refers to data that is in motion or real-time data.
"You can see the use cases, especially in e-commerce, which is a big one, and healthcare," Catanzano said. "Lots of things are happening now where AI has gotten to the point where it can analyze data that's moving, not necessarily just sitting."
He added that since Confluent has been a leader in the streaming data domain for some time, it makes sense for IBM to acquire it.
"The bigger trend is that companies like IBM are really building out full end-to-end data platforms and strategically this now really fits in where they can really work with static data and data in motion," Catanzano said.
The acquisition also indicates the direction IBM is heading in data management, particularly after it acquired vector database vendor DataStax in May.
"You see their strategy of being able to both work with static data, structured and unstructured data and now data in motion to cover the platform of data," Catanzano said.
The cloud and AI model provider wants to be the platform to "move, process and govern data to support AI as an important new battleground," said Andrew Humphreys, an analyst at Gartner. He added that this pattern is similar to Salesforce's acquisition of Informatica.
"This enables IBM to compete more effectively against Salesforce, Oracle and others as being the platform to control and access your data and feed AI," Humphreys continued.
The acquisition also merges the two companies in areas where they compete with each other, such as the event broker market and the event streaming and data analytics arena, he said.
Therefore, IBM can bring together what both vendors offer and "deliver a comprehensive set of event broker offerings that address the full breadth of event-driven architecture use cases," Humphreys said. "Confluent can combine with IBM's existing data portfolio to provide a strong platform to underpin providing well-curated data for AI and analytics."
Even as IBM seeks to strengthen its data strategy, data quality will continue to be a challenge, Catanzano continued.
"Data trust and data quality are the most important things," he said. "When you think about trust and quality, you also think about governance. So being able to ensure there's no personal confidential information … that's an important part of it."
IBM plans to complete the acquisition in 2026.
