The investment shows the trend of big tech's growing interest in India, and how they're using data centers to bolster future plans and opportunities.
Google plans to make a $15 billion investment over the next five years to launch an AI Hub in India, bringing the first AI stack to the country, the company said Tuesday.
Google said the investment is aligned with India's Viksit Bharat 2047, which is aimed at expanding AI-driven services as part of its effort to become a developed country by its 100th anniversary of independence. The strategy for establishing that vision is centered around making economic, technology, infrastructure and environmental changes.
Google's investment marks a growing interest in the data center industry in India, which is currently constrained by capacity and access to GPU computing. In January, Microsoft announced a $3 billion investment over two years in data center expansions in India. OpenAI has also opened an office in India and plans to invest $1 billion.
"As AI and technology adoption increase, data centers are the new factor of production and growth drivers," said Kashyap Kompella, CEO of RPA2AI Research. "When the Google data center comes online in a few years, it will help meet the growing demand for AI and cloud infrastructure."
It will also help Google's position in the Indian cloud market, where it currently trails behind AWS and Microsoft Azure, Kompella said.
The data center investments as well as services and programs offered by U.S. tech vendors in India -- such as free use of Google Gemini for students and other academic partnerships -- show that, "Big Tech and Big AI are looking at India as a top 10 market for their expansion," Kompella said.
"While India has largely adopted U.S and Western AI platforms, there is also a growing desire to nurture the local AI ecosystems to develop India-specific applications," he added.
The growing interest in India, currently the most populous country in the world, comes with its own set of regulatory requirements.
India's Digital Personal Data Privacy Act, which was enacted in 2023, requires tech companies to adhere to data collection, processing, storage and transfer restrictions, according to Kompella.
"Having a local data center presence will help companies position for the growing Indian market opportunities," he said.
